General Dubai Information

  • Currency = AED (Arab Emirate Dirhams) or Dirhams for short – > 5 AED = 1 Pound
  • Country = UAE (United Arab Emirates) – Dubai is just a city
  • Location = Joined to Oman and Saudi, it’s 100% safe.
  • Distance from UK = 6-7 hours on flight (depending on direction of flying)
  • What is Abu Dhabi? = The capital city, approx. 1 hour drive from Dubai
  • Where is Dubai airport? = Right in the center of Dubai, 20 mins to anywhere
  • How to I get around? = 40,000 Taxi’s ready and waiting, everywhere, for very cheap!
  • Will they chop my hands off? = NO! Never will they ever chop your hands off
  • Are they Muslim? = YES, but the are very nice 🙂 plus the city is very very open and and designed around UK and US cultures.

Dubai Info – Males

  • Can I get smashed? = YES, it’s mental! You’ll love it
  • Can I buy a carry out? = NO, no carry out booze can be sold to tourists. Only bars etc will sell you drink. If you plan on bringing spirits or beers etc, please pack them in your suitcase. Note – There is a duty free available while exiting Dubai airport. This duty is there to allow tourists to buy booze in Dubai. There is a per person limit, but fairly reasonable. Each person can take 5L of spirits / wines or 48 cans/bottles of beer. The prices are still duty free also. This exiting duty is a great option to stock up on drink for the hotels rooms.
  • Where do we drink? = Any of the 1000 bars all over Dubai – Google “Timeout Dubai” for ideas on how many bars and places to eat etc is available – http://www.timeoutdubai.com/
  • Can I drink on the streets? = NO! Never!!! Keep it in pubs, clubs and houses
  • Can I go about wi my tap aff? = NO! Never!!! Only at beaches and pools is this cool
  • Is it 10 quid a Pint? NO!!! Its 15 quid…. Hahaha but that’s only in pricey places. If you go for quick pint your average is 8 quid / pint. Happy hours hours is 4 quid / pint. Brunches are all you can drink for 4 hours (spirits and anything). I’ll make sure you get a good deal on the pints 🙂
  • Can I get clothes cheaper? = NO! twice the price in Dubai…

Dubai Info – Females

  • Can I wear a Bikini? = YES, everyone wears them at the beach and pools
  • Do I need to cover up? = NO! You can wear short, skirts, low cut tops etc, BUT not at the malls. Those are the only places you need to cover up a wee bit
  • Can I eat the food? = Yes, they have everything there, from every nation in the world, the selection is amazing. Even have Scottish fish and chips etc – Google “Timeout Dubai” for ideas on how many bars and places to eat etc is available
  • Is there things for kids? = YES, LOADS for kids to do, Ferrari world, Lego land, Marvel Studios, sega world, 3 water parks to name a few
  • What clothes shall I bring? = Speak to Rena…
  • What is the average temp for getting a tan? = In Oct you can expect 28-35 DegC and 22-25 DegC at night 🙂
  • Will I have time to sit by the pool? = 100%, On the morning 10th, 11th and 13th during the wedding you’ll have until mid afternoon for tanning.

Direct Flights (Best Option)

Emirates is the best option for flying to dubai, not only is it the best airline in the world, it’s also the most convenient option for flying.

Airport:

DXB is right in the heart of Dubai, only 20 minutes in taxi to anyways in the city.

Routes:

1. Glasgow (GLA) to Dubai (DXB)

  • Operates twice a day
  • 6 hours direct flight

2. Newcastle (NTL) to Dubai (DXB)

  • Operates twice a day
  • 6 hours direct flight
  • 3.5 hour drive to Newcastle.

I would personnally book the Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi from Edinburgh instead of the Newcastle flight, as its less driving time but this is a great option also if the Glasgow Emirates flights or Etihad flights are full or expensive.

Baggage:

  • 30kg per adult for checked in Luggage, can check in mutiple bags.
  • 7kg for hand luggage / adult
  • Can take golf clubs or sporting equipment for free – no baggage allowance used

Transport:

Taxi’s are dirt cheap in Dubai and there are thousands of taxi’s waiting outside the airport, ready to take you anywhere in Dubai in less than 20 minutes.

Notes:

Dubai airport also has a Duty free for booze on the way out the airport (no joke). You can take out 5 L of spirits on the way out and as many fags as you can carry 🙂

 

Etihad is the 2nd best option for flying to Dubai, voted the best airline in the world last year.

Etihad is the Abu Dhabi airline. Abu Dhabi is only 50 minutes drive from Dubai.

AUH is right in on the outside area of Abu Dhabi, only 50 minutes drive to Dubai.

Routes:

1. Edinburgh (EDI) to Abu Dhabi (AUH)

  • 6 hours direct flight
  • 50 minutes drive to Dubai

This flight might be a better option than the Emirates Newcastle Flight.

Baggage:

Arriving in Dubai

IMPORTANT

  • For ANY medication you’re planning to bring to Dubai, please make sure you have a doctors prescription. There are also some banned medication in Dubai, please check with your doctor regarding this before arriving.
  • You CANNOT buy a carryout in Dubai. There is a duty free available while exiting Dubai airport. This is the only place you can buy booze so stock up! There is a per person limit, but fairly reasonable. Each person can take 5L of spirits / wines or 48 cans/bottles of beer. This exiting duty is a great option to stock up on drink for the hotels rooms. You can’t miss it, the duty free is where you collect your bags and right next to the exist.
  • Get a taxi direct to your hotel. Don’t use the metro or book anything in advance. Taxi’s signs are shown once you exist the terminal and there’s 100’s of taxi’s readily available 24/7. Don’t use the black private taxi’s though… These are a lot more expensive, stick to the regular dubai gov taxi’s.
